How the Magic Mirror works

The Magic Mirror is a full-length mirror with a touch-sensitive surface and a DSLR camera hidden behind the glass. When nobody is using it, it looks like an elegant mirror on a stand. Touch it and animations appear on the surface, inviting guests to pose, counting them down and then showing the result on the glass. Between photos it runs short games and prompts, which is where most of the laughter comes from.

The DSLR and LED lighting give the photos a quality closer to a professional portrait than a phone snap. Once the shots are taken, guests can add a filter, choose a GIF or send the result to the printer. A print for each guest emerges from the side of the mirror and the attendant adds one to the guest book while the next group steps forward.

Dimensions, ceiling height and placement

The mirror unit measures approximately 1.8m high, 0.7m wide and 0.7m deep, and you should allow a 2 metre by 2 metre area for the mirror, the backdrop and the group posing in front. Ceiling height needs to be 2 metres or more, which rules out very few rooms. Power is a single standard socket.

Position the mirror so that guests face a backdrop rather than a window, and so the glass does not reflect bright lights or the disco. The surface shows reflections when it is idle, so a spot with soft, even light works best. The attendant will advise on the day if the first choice of location is not ideal. The unit travels in protective cases and our team handles the lifting, so first-floor rooms are usually fine; just let us know in advance if there is no lift.

Group size and keeping the queue moving

Up to eight guests fit in a single frame, which makes the mirror a good choice for bridal parties, work teams and families who want everyone in one photo. Allowing for the animations and games, a session takes around a minute to a minute and a half, so plan on thirty-five to forty groups an hour. Every guest gets a print, so a group of eight leaves with eight copies.

For weddings, we usually recommend the mirror opens during the drinks reception or after the wedding breakfast, when guests are mingling rather than eating. Unlimited sessions mean repeat visits are encouraged, and the games keep the queue entertained while they wait.

Prints for every guest and the digital gallery

Each person in the shot receives a print on your custom template, ready within seconds. Alongside the prints, the mirror captures GIFs and applies filters, all of which are saved and shared to social media or by email from the mirror itself. At the end of the hire you receive a USB with every image, so there is a full set for the album or the company newsletter.

The print template is designed around your colours, with names, date, hashtag or logo. The on-screen animations and welcome message can use the same artwork, and we can match the backdrop to your palette. Props are included, and we can add themed props or a green screen background on request.
